Familiarizing yourself with the ground conditions before you start drilling allows you to properly select the right tool for the job. Hard Rock & Shale: Do rocks feel pain? There’s only one way to find out. Look for a bit with a steep taper and sharp teeth to allow for easier penetration and quicker steering in extreme conditions.

Cobble, Gravel & Loose Rock: Cutting through cobble can be complicated (say that five times fast). A bit that’s too pointed runs the risk of getting caught up in the rubble. Instead, use a bit with a “scoop” design to effectively remove smaller, loose debris while chewing through the hard surface.

Sand & Clay: These conditions can be a real beach. If you’re drilling in packed sand, you’ll want a pointed bit with some kickass carbides for extra protection against the abrasive material. For loose sand or soft clay, switch out the point for a wide blade for extra steering control.
